In 1788 the livestock industry commenced in Australia with the importation of 44 sheep and goats, 7 cows, a bull calf, a bull, 9 horses, some pigs and a few poultry that were included in the First Fleet. From these humble beginnings Australia has become one of the major livestock producing countries of the world. In addition to the breeds listed below Australia has also developed: Australian Red (dairy cattle), Beefmaker, Mandalong Special, Queensland Miniature Boran and Simford cattle; plus Comeback, Elliotdale, Gromark, Waridale and Zenith sheep.[1]
