Definition from Wiktionary, a free dictionary

Many pairs (or sometimes sets of more than two) of similar-sounding English words are understandably subject to widespread confusion or catachresis whereby word A is used when word B's meaning is the one that is meant. This confusion can become so entrenched that the meaning of word A is widely regarded as being identical with the meaning of word B, and thus word A's specific usefulness, not to mention integrity, is in danger of being lost to many English users. (The list is intended to include only cases of catachresis supported by external sources, e.g. style guides.)
