From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Due to the excellent dynastic marriages by his children, King Christian IX of Denmark was known as the "father-in-law" of Europe.

The matches were as a result of the hard work of his wife Queen Louise:

  • Frederick succeeded his father as King of Denmark
  • Vilhelm was elected King of the Hellenes (King of Greece)
  • Thyra Married the Crown Prince of Hanover, who was also a member of the British Royal Family, to become Crown Princess of Hanover (and Duchess of Cumberland and Teviotdale)
  • Valdemar is an ancestor of the monarchs of Sweden and Romania

King Christian and Queen Louise therefore are common ancestors of the current and former ruling houses of Denmark, The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (and also the 15 other Commonwealth Realms), Russia, Greece, Hanover, Sweden, Romania, Belgium, Luxembourg, Spain, Yugoslavia and Norway.
