The PC (short for Personal Computer) is a versatile gaming platform, but it is generally not classed as a console.
PCs can run a variety of operating systems, but because of Microsoft's dominance of the operating system market almost all PC games are only released for Windows; prior to Windows 95 and the advent of DirectX, games were instead primarily produced for MS-DOS. As a result, terms such as "PC games" and "computer games" have come to refer specifically to games programmed for DOS and/or Windows. Game releases for other PC operating systems (such as Linux or Mac OS) are instead referred to by the name of the operating system itself ("Linux games", "Mac games", etc.)
