For the purposes of this category and its descendants, a politician is someone who (at some time in their lives)

  • holds an elective governmental office
  • works for government in a policy-making capacity
  • is associated with a party that has recently won elections, or is widely regarded as about to, as a candidate or as a full-time staff member.
