The Night of the Long Knives was executed by the Gestapo, the Sicherheitsdienst (SD), Schutzstaffel (SS) on Adolf Hitler's orders. Its aim was to eliminate the internal opposition to Hitler's absolute authority within the Sturmabteilung (SA – the storm troopers). Several long-time enemies and other opponents were eliminated during the purge that took place between 30 June and 2 July 1934. During the purge, many of Hitler's chief opponents were put to death without trial.
