The Night of the Long Knives was executed by the Gestapo, the Sicherheitsdienst (SD), Schutzstaffel (SS) on Adolf Hitler's orders. Its aim was to eliminate the internal opposition to Hitler's absolute authority within the Sturmabteilung (SA – the storm troopers).
